Introduction

Revelation of the Quran was a source of guide, inspiration and mercy. Bringing multiple divine teaching upon mankind; mercy and easiness were two key messages. The Quran frequently visits the ruling of easiness and decreasing the burden upon the human race. This message will be extended to the recitation and speech along with the physical attributes. Therefore according to certain scholars, the revelation of the Quran was done upon seven different formats and letters as informed in the Hadeeth. As a result of these different formats, the different scholars of Qira’ah of the past passed on the different possible methods of Qira’ah which gained acceptance by the scholars of knowledge and the Ummah. There are many different recitations that were passed through generation, some gaining acceptance and some were not regarded by the scholars according to their research. These methods all stem back to the time of the Prophet and the companions where the different tribes were allowed to pray the verses in slightly different methods, all inferring the correct message of the Quran.

From amongst the different methods were the 7 mutawatir (universally accepted) methods, further in addition to the 7 another 3, in total 10 mutawatir (universally accepted) methods. These 10 different recitation methods refer back to 10 Imams of Qira’ah, each consisting of two famous narrators.

The following table mentions the 10 imams and their 2 narrators each.

The different narrations have many different benefits. From amongst them:

  • Preserving the different methods of recitation
  • Understanding the recitation aspects of Tafseers (Quran commentaries)
  • Understanding the meaning of the Quran using the different recitation methods.
  • Preserving many rules of syntax and morphology.

Our institute provides for the students in the Alim course, year 4 & year 5 students to study these 10 different methods under the guidance of an experience teacher in a two year course.
